This is a very hardy low growing, suckering, evergreen shrub. It has bright yellow flowers and dark blue berries which are combined with the red or purple leaves in autumn. The flowers are fragrant like Lilly of the valley. The leaves have a thorny toothed edge. To encourage bushy growth prune to ground level every two years popular for hedges and margins.
Fruit: The blue berries which are produced can be made in to jelly, jam, wine or brandy. Each berry can contain up to 5 seeds.
Timber: The dried branches are a good fuel.
Soil Types / Habitat: It will grow in most soil, but it must be well drained. It prefers to grow in partial shade.
