A large domed tree with deeply ridged dark brown bark. The Montery Pine is one of the 3-needled pines that is distinguished by its slender bright green needles found on branchlets, with large cones that can remain intact on the tree for years. The cones only open when heated, and then the wind is able to shake out the seeds. One of the fastest growing conifers, it is grown for timber and shelter, and is excellent at withstanding sea winds.
Cones: The cones are large, irregular and flattened on one side, they can be up to 14cm in height. The cones grow in clusters of 3 – 5 and remain on the tree for many years.
Timber: The timber is used for boxes and paper pulp.
Soil Types / Habitat: It can tolerate most types of soils. It tolerates most types of habitat.
