It is a large native shrub with large green pinnate leaves. It is very vigorous and produces snowy clusters of creamy-white flowers. It is the only tree which rabbits find distasteful.
Fruit: The flowers make elder tea, wine and add musky flavour to pies. In September it produces glossy black berries which can be used to make pies, wine and jellies.
Timber: The wood is hollow and was used to make pea shooters.
Soil Types / Habitat: It will thrive on any nitrogen soil. It will grow in most areas, due to its pollution resistance it is ideal for planting on slag or rubble heaps.
